PINK RIBBON DAY CELEBRATED AT SHAH ABDUL LATIF UNIVERSITY

The celebration of Pink Ribbon Day took place at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur which was organized jointly by the Institute of Gender Studies, SALU and Bhittai Social Watch & Advocacy (BSWA) on Thursday October 24, 2019. An awareness walk was also held from the Faculty of Natural Sciences. Prof. Dr. Parveen Shah, Vice Chancellor led the walk.

Speaking to the participants of the walk, VC SALU, Prof. Dr. Parveen Shah appreciated the role of NIMRA Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) and BSWA for creating awareness about the preventive steps of the breast cancer and cancer as general disease. She also said this disease is fatal but adopting preventive measures at early stage we could save the humanity. Dr. Parveen Shah appreciated the role of Institute of Gender Studies for promoting the curricular and co-curricular activities at campus.

Further More, a seminar was held on the theme “Let’s Defeat Breast Cancer Together”. Meritorious Professor Dr. Muhammad Yousuf Khushk, Pro-Vice Chancellor presided over the seminar.

Dr. Yousuf Khushk also mentioned that the objective is to emphasize on healthy life style of women and young girls taking about their health and confidence in order to reduce the chances of breast cancer and sensitize about life saving cause.

Dr. Siraj Ahmed Abbasi, Dr. Javeria and Dr. Iram Naz Memon said that the term cancer covers more than hundred diseases that share one trait a cell grow out of control and destroy healthy tissue for women the most common type is breast cancer. They said if any member of the family has a breast cancer, risk of getting breast cancer increases.

They also elaborated that Pakistan has the highest rate of Breast Cancer compared to  other Asian countries as approximately 90000 new cases are diagnosed per annum out of which 40000 comes out as fatal. Besides that lack of breast feeding, diet, less parity and smoking are most causes associated with breast cancer. 

Ms. Tasleem Alam Abro, Incharge Institute of Gender Studies, Prof. Dr. Ghulam Mohiuddin Veesar, Director Postgraduate Studies, Mr. Khadim Hussain Mirani, Executive Director BSWA and others also spoke on this occasion and shared their views on this topic.

Prof. Dr. Parveen Shah distributed the certificates and shields among the team of the NIMRA GIMS.
